Here's what you need to know:

What is the purpose of this legislation?

In some Michigan communities, towns are now requiring minimum rental stays or prohibiting rentals completely. Michigan homeowners should be able to rent out their property. It’s simply a matter of private property rights.

Does this proposed legislation stop local governments from regulating rental properties in their towns?

No. This legislation simply stops local governments from banning short-term rentals outright. Local governments will still be able to pass reasonable rules and regulations to protect public safety and deal with bad behavior. If there are problems, we should hold property owners accountable through existing code enforcement, not eliminate their right to rent.

Why is this legislation important?

Homes and vacation properties are important investments for many Michigan families. The ability to rent out a home helps to maximize that investment. Furthermore, the revenue generated by visitors and tourists who rent homes and vacation properties creates jobs and helps the local economy and small businesses.
