Michigan Association of REALTORS® announces 2005 MARST scholarship
recipients
The Michigan Association of REALTORS® is pleased to announce
the 2005 MARST Scholarship Award Recipients.
Congratulations to Charity Jordan of Grand Rapids, Andrew Dresselhouse
of Ann Arbor, Jeffrey Helstowski of Brighton, Dan Fiebelkorn of Muskegon,
Angela Krohn of Lansing, Nicholas Schwartz of West Bloomfield, and
Christopher Patterson of Port Huron.
The MARST fund provides scholarships to full-time undergraduate
and graduate students who are taking classes that will prepare them
for a career involving real estate. The winners are selected from
the MARST board of trustees, and students can receive up to $2,000
per year from the fund.
The winners come from diverse backgrounds and have extensive goals,
achievements, and interest in their educational experiences. However,
they all have one thing in common: a passion for success.
The following are short biographies for each of the award winners.
Charity Jordan
Charity is a 2002 graduate of Ottowa Hills High School in Grand
Rapids, and is currently a senior at Howard University in Washington,
D.C. She has an outstanding 3.82 GPA and has financed her entire
college education herself. Her accomplishments include being named
one of the top six Howard University marketing students, receiving
the prestigious $10,000 Ford Corporate Scholarship, and the Howard
University $16,000 Leadership Scholarship. She has also received
many other scholarships, awards, and recognitions in honor of her
academics.
Charity eventually plans to obtain a real estate license, become
an agent, and also work for LaSalle Bank in their Commercial Banking
Development Program. She noted that she is interested in a career
involving real estate because she loves the entrepreneurial aspect
of business and loves to be challenged.
Charity currently works as a sales associate for Guess, Inc. and
was named top sales associate for all D.C. area Guess Stores. She
is also a member of The Golden Key National Honor Society, and is
the vice president of Finance for The Marketing Professionals Club
at Howard University.
Charity enjoys playing tennis, watching basketball, shopping and
working out in her free time.
Finally, Charity wanted to mention that she is very grateful for
the scholarship and said, “I promise I won’t let MARST
down as an exceptional student, scholarship recipient, and future
corporate leader.”
Andrew Dresselhouse
Andy is a 2003 graduate from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. He is
currently attending Eastern Michigan University where he is a junior
studying construction management. He is the owner and operator
of Dresselhouse’s Lawn Service, which has over 50 accounts,
both residential and commercial. He has managed to be successful
in both his business and in college and it shows: Andy is on the
Dean’s List at EMU. Also, he has received previous scholarships
from Ann Arbor Student Homebuilding, The Homebuilder’s Association,
and the Building Officials Conference of Michigan. In the future,
Andy plans to put all of his knowledge to use by combining construction
management and real estate to buy, remodel, and sell homes.
While attending EMU, Andy has been a member of the Eastern Constructors
Club and enjoys bowling and playing hockey and golf in his spare
time. He also enjoys snowmobiling and water sports.
After graduation, Andy said that he plans to continue to run his
business so that it will hopefully provide him the means necessary
to make his way into real estate and construction. “I plan
to finish my construction management degree to give me a solid base
in construction. Then I will start getting into real estate sales
so I can eventually develop or remodel properties and sell them.
I feel that the real estate market is consistently promising, and
I would like to have the freedom and opportunities that come from
working for myself,” he said.
Jeffery Helstowski
Jeffery hails from Brighton and is a 2003 graduate of Brighton High
School. He is currently a junior at Central Michigan University and
studying business administration and criminal justice. During the
spring semester at CMU, Jeffery plans to take a fundamentals of real
estate class and receive his Michigan Real Estate License. He is
most interested in a career in real estate because he wants to work
with a variety of people in a fast paced industry, and would someday
like to work in commercial real estate or move into mortgage and
title work.
Currently, Jeffery works as an administrative assistant at the Education
Materials Center at CMU. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports,
snowboarding and skiing, the outdoors, cooking, and volunteering.
In regards to his real estate career, Jeffery said, “I want
to take it one step at a time and try to learn everything I can.
I would like to absorb all the information that I concur from other
agents like a sponge, so one day I will be as successful as them.”
Dan Fiebelkorn
Dan is a graduate of Reeths-Puffer High School and grew up in Muskegon.
He is currently a junior at Michigan State University studying accounting.
Eventually, Dan would like to get his masters in accounting and take
his CPA exam to get his license.
Dan is currently on the Dean’s List at MSU with a 3.6 GPA and
a 3.7 in the Business School. He recently began an internship at
a local accounting firm in East Lansing where he plans to further
expand his knowledge of accounting. As far as real estate, he has
already received his license and is interested in the areas of accounting
and marketing, and noted that he will enjoy getting to work with
clients one-on-one. He also wants to personally sell office buildings,
apartment complexes and small housing units.
Some of Dan’s accomplishments beyond high school include receiving
the Muskegon Community Foundation Scholarship and being the treasurer
of the Mary-Mayo Hall Student Government. He is also a member of
the accounting club and the Izzone at MSU. In his spare time, Dan
enjoys playing volleyball, softball, being an MSU sports fan, and
being a soccer referee.
Angela Krohn
Angela hails from Hartland, WI and completed her undergraduate studies
at St. Could State University in St. Cloud, MN. Upon graduation,
Angela attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV to complete
her Masters degree in sports medicine. Currently, Angela is a third-year
student at The Michigan State University College of Law and is expecting
to obtain her Juris Doctor in May 2006. She plans to hold a career
involving the legal and business aspects of real estate, and has
completed several business and finance classes that can be directly
related to the real estate industry. To help her achieve these goals
and learn more about the profession, Angela works as an assistant
at the Michigan Association of REALTORS®.
Angela has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
since 1995, and the American Bar Association since 2005, is the editor-in-chief
of the MSU College of Law’s Entertainment and Sports Law Journal,
President of the Business Law Society, and president of the Medical-Legal
Society. She has also received the Spicer award for excellence in
entertainment and sports law.
Outside of sports medicine and being a law student, Angela enjoys
traveling and watching football.
Angela noted that she is very grateful for the MARST scholarship
and said, “It has helped me fund a portion of my legal education,
which I intend to utilize to assist others with real estate and business
transactions. I would like to thank Doug and Kathie Whitehouse for
their support and time they spent interviewing me for the scholarship.”
Nicholas Schwartz
This is Nicholas’ second year receiving the MARST award; his
educational endeavors and accomplishments are ever-growing. Nicholas
is from West Bloomfield and attended West Bloomfield High School.
From there, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL and received
a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Economics. He also
received his Real Estate Salesperson License in 2004 from the Michigan
Institute of Realty. He acquired an interest in real estate from
his dad who is an agent and encouraged him to get a license because
of the many advantages it would give him in the business world. Nicholas
is currently a Juris Doctor Candidate at the Valparaiso University
School of Law in Valparaiso, IN. In the future, Nicholas would like
to be involved in the real estate field as either a broker or an
attorney with his own office. Some of his awards and accomplishments
include the Bradley University Scholarship and the Bradley University
Special Scholarship, the Valparaiso School of Law Heritage Scholarship,
and being named to the Dean’s List at BU. Nicholas was also
a member of the business honor fraternity, Phi Chi Theta, the Freshman
Honor Society Phi Eta Sigma, and president of the English Honor Society
Sigma Delta Tau at BU. He is currently a sportswriter for the VUSL
Newspaper The Forum, is a member of the Sports and Entertainment
Law Association, and the Jewish Law Student Association. In his spare
time, Nicholas enjoys soccer, working out, and relaxing. Nicholas
mentioned that he is most proud of graduating from BU with a great
academic record. “I hope soon that the accomplishment I will
be most proud of is graduating from VUSL with a similar academic
record.”
Christopher Patterson
Chris hails from Peck, a small town near Port Huron, MI. He attended
Peck High School and was the Valedictorian of the class of 2003.
Chris dual-enrolled at St. Clair Community college during high
school, and then transferred to Western Michigan University when
he graduated, where he is now a student in the pre-law program.
He has received many honors and scholarships, and some of them
include the Western Michigan Medallion Scholarship, the Marine
Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, the Olzem Award, a Western Michigan
University Academic Scholarship, the Peck American Legion Scholarship,
and the Hannan Scholarship. Since he is studying pre-law, Chris
wants to continue his education by attending law school and studying
the aspects of real estate law. Chris said, “I feel by entering
a career in real estate with a law degree will be advantageous
to the industry by upholding the rights of property owners. I hope
by combining a law degree with real estate will allow me to become
a helpful, resourceful, and contributing member of society.” While
attending WMU, Chris is involved in the Western Pre-Law Society
and the National Honors Society. Additionally, he is also a member
of the Michigan Mountain Bikers Association and the Youth Advisory
Council of Michigan. Finally, Chris enjoys mountain biking, investing
in stocks, and four wheeling in his free time. He mentioned that
he has received much inspiration from his father, who is an associate/broker
for Red Carpet Keim Realty. “My father has given me the opportunity
through his career to gain the knowledge and insight of what is
comprised in the real estate profession,” he said.
