For more than eleven years, Kenneth L. Scott has guided people through the home buying process.

Scott is the Founder and Real Estate Broker of Candler, Scott and Wallace Real Estate Consultants located in Detroit, an exclusive buyer agency real estate brokerage.

He started the business because he has a passion for educating our community about the home buying and retaining homeownership.

Scott is highly recognized in the community. In 2003, he was the President of the Greater Detroit Chapter Women’s Council of Realtors and Realtor of the Year. In 2004 he was President of the Detroit Association of Realtors and Realtor of the Year. He was President and Executive Director of Detroit Homeownership Counseling Collaborative. In 2005, he founded the Anti-Predatory Lending Coalition in Metro-Detroit and has served as Chairman and host for the International Detroit’s Black Expo’s “Get Your House in Order” event held in December of 2005 and 2006. In January of 2007, he attained the real estate designation of Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) and became a member of the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents. In May of 2007, he served as the Chairman of Buy Black Weekend Real Estate Pavilion.

“I want people to know that this is a “buyer’s market” and there are reputable professionals out here whose passion it is, to properly educate our community in the home buying process.” Scott said. “There are professionals like myself who want to educate our people, to not only buy the home but retain the home. If buying a home for investment purposes, an investor might not want to flip properties in this market, but retain them, rent them and or turn them over to a property management company.”

He teaches people how to budget, improve their credit, find a mortgage lender, find the right mortgage product or program for them, buy the home and maintain the home. Scott says that maintaining good credit affects your buying power and is a necessary first step to homeownership. “If you have good to excellent credit you can attain a great interest rate but without it the home buyer will be paying hundreds of dollars more per month,” Scott said.

For some, this can be a discouraging factor but he said if a person is striving to pay off loans, charge cards and other bills, or at least making and keeping the set arrangements to avoid default, then this will possibly, increase their credit score.

Many don’t understand their credit score or the consequences of poor payment history and accumulated debt. Scott takes the time to explain it to his clients, why all these factors are important. He also takes a step further by customizing the session to the individual’s needs.

Scott said the homeownership process should not be burdensome but after the proper education is administered, his clients will be prepared to make smart decisions that they can pass on to their children and their children’s children. Education and knowledge should transcend generations.

In addition, Scott helps his clients learn how to buy homes in move-in condition and, buy homes in as-is condition, utilizing the FHA 203k Rehab loan, avoiding the pitfalls of buying a home, in need of rehab. “More importantly we teach you after you get in the home, you have to maintain not only the home but the communities that you buy in.” Scott said. “Buying the home is just the beginning.”
