Brenda Goss Andrews retired from the Detroit Police Department as a Deputy Chief with 30 years of dedicated public service. She served over 25 years in leadership positions, being promoted through the ranks from police officer to sergeant, lieutenant, inspector and commander. As Commander she was in charge of the departments Personnel Division which included hiring police officers and overseeing the departments training section. In 2002 she was promoted to Deputy Chief of the departments’ Fiscal Management Bureau where she was the first female in the 137 year history of the police department to oversee the departments’ $400 million dollar budget and $30 million dollars in state and federal grant funding. Her vision, expertise in business performance, and structured management approach led to significant savings and process improvements for the department during her tenure. Her turnaround approach to achieving positive results have been highlighted by her accomplishments in human resources, recruiting and hiring practices, project and grant management, inventory, and fiscal management controls and facility management. She was the project director for the new 62,000 square foot, $16 million dollar state-of-the art Southwest Public Safety Center located on W. Fort Street, which is shared today by the police, fire and the municipal parking departments. Today you can see her name inscribed on the plaque inside the facility.
Retired Deputy Chief Goss Andrews received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and a Master’s of Science from Michigan State University. She is a graduate of the prestigious FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia and the Northwestern School of Staff and Command.
She currently serves on the City of Detroit’s Citizens Review Committee (CRC), which reviews Neighborhood Opportunity Fund (NOF) grant proposals from community-based organizations. Over the past 15 years, she has reviewed countless proposals and made over $120 million dollars in award recommendations. She has also been actively involved in community-based and grass-roots organizations for over 25 years. She has served as a board member for Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust (ALPACT), Kerwood Mental Health Board, and the Collaborative on Offender Training (COTE), to name a few. She is a board member on the Health Service Technical Assistance-Addiction Treatment Services, a member of the National Congress of Black Women (NCBW), Michigan Democratic Party, 14th Congressional District, Wayne County Black Caucus and the National and Michigan Chapter of Realtors. Currently she is the Chairperson of the 12th Precinct Neighborhood Vacant House Task Force which comprises 11 communities in northwest Detroit. She was one of 50 Michigan realtors selected by the Michigan Association of Realtors to attend the prestigious “Land Use Academy”. She is the past treasurer for the Detroit Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and is currently the financial secretary. She has also served as a training committee chairperson for the FBI National Academy Associates.
Prior to joining the police department, retired Deputy Chief Goss Andrews worked as a student intern at New Detroit, a substitute teacher for the Detroit Public School system and as an assembly worker and statistical analyst at General Motors Corporation. Brenda is the President of J. P. Britt Enterprises, LLC, a real estate consulting company and is also a licensed Michigan realtor. Brenda drives a Chrysler product. She was born in the city of Detroit and currently lives in the lovely University District community.
