Earlier this year, the legislature began their budget considerations with the discussion of a potential sales tax on services. During that time, the Michigan Association of REALTORS® joined with other business organizations in Michigan to form the ‘One Voice for Reform’ coalition to impress upon the members of the House and Senate the importance of making the tough choices to reduce spending, avoid taxation increases and pass meaningful reforms to revitalize state government. Members of the coalition met with each member of the House and Senate echoing the message that the legislature must get their fiscal house in order and focus on much needed government reforms. Although we are not ready to declare victory, as budget negotiations are still in progress. A general agreement on the FY 2010-2011 budget has been reached without any tax increases and tax shifts. The budget deal includes reforms to the state employee’s retirement and the liquor control commission as well as a $208 million transfer from the School Aide Fund to cover the general fund's payment to community colleges. We will keep you updated as budget negotiations continue.
