Thanks to the hard work of our local associations and REALTOR® members, endorsements were made in 70 of 110 House races, 31 of 38 Senate races, and 3 of 15 Congressional races for the Primary Election on August 3rd. After all the dust settled from the election, 86% of the endorsed candidates for the Michigan House of Representatives and 81% of the Michigan Senate candidates were successful. Many of the endorsements will carry though to the General Election. However, there are seats where endorsements need to be made as the endorsed candidate was not successful in the primary or an endorsement was not made in the primary. Local associations are currently hosting candidate interviews to make these endorsement recommendations. Please watch your mailboxes in the end of October for the General Election Voter Cards.

With the help of McClelland & Anderson, we are taking the most recently asked questions from our legal hotline and putting them in E-news. We will be featuring a different question each issue.
QUESTION: I am representing a Buyer in the purchase of a home. I have referred the Buyer to a moving company and I will be receiving a referral fee from this company. Is this a violation of RESPA?
ANSWER: NO. RESPA regulates “settlement services” related to the making of a federally related mortgage loan. Services that are provided after closing, such as moving services, are not considered “settlement services” as defined by RESPA.
IRS wants to gain insight on how small business owners prefer to receive information to make it easier for the small business community to understand and meet their tax obligations. As a result, they are conducting an On-Line Survey that will be used to recommend improvements to tax education and guidance for small business owners. The information received will help shape future IRS outreach efforts. The Survey is being conducted by MITRE Corporation, which is a federally-funded research and development center (FFRDC) that supports the U.S. government on issues of national importance. It was prompted by a 2007 National Taxpayer Advocate Report to Congress, which recognized the need for IRS to improve outreach and education efforts for small business owners and provide better guidance on tax rules. The Survey will be conducted from now through August 20, 2010, or until a maximum number of responses are received. Take the online survey today! Opening the link will take each participant directly to the MITRE Web page. Name and contact information will be used for recruitment logistics only and will not be shared with MITRE (who will host and analyze the survey) or with the IRS (the recipient of the survey results). Please note that all participant information collected from this On-Line Survey will be kept strictly confidential.
