Property Tax Relief Tops Legislative Priorities - MAR Taxation Task Force meets to analyze legislation

Since the beginning of the 2009 legislative year, many bills have been introduced in both the House and Senate dealing with property tax relief. Many legislative committee meetings have been scheduled, and workgroups are in place to examine each complicated piece of property tax relief legislation.

During his opening day speech, Speaker Dillon (D-Redford) called for ballot initiatives on various tax measures. In addition, Representative Brian Calley (R-Portland) introduced a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment to prohibit property tax increases for homes with market values that have declined or remained unchanged. And the Senate equally has their own ideas on tackling Michigan property taxes.

Last week, the MAR Public Policy committee met, and charged the MAR Taxation Task Force with analyzing bills relating to property taxes and assessment measures. The task force will aide in defining this association’s core principals when taking a stand on each of these bills and initiatives.

The MAR continues to support sound public policy to curb high property taxes and the staggering foreclosure rate in this state. Given the severity of the problem, the MAR, along with the Taxation Task force, will continue to advocate for the best public policy to help Michigan citizens.

Local Associations Across the Country Experience Significant Membership Loss

Membership in the Durango Area Association of REALTORS® slipped 15 percent during the last two months before recovering slightly, reflecting the downturn in real estate sales.

The real estate association had 347 members at the end of 2008, board director Robin Williams wrote in the association's February newsletter. That decreased to 295 before rebounding to 300.

"Although we sincerely regret the reasons that necessitated the loss of these colleagues, from an association standpoint, we are faring better than the national average and neighboring boards," Williams wrote.

The newsletter lists 18 real estate agents under "Good Bye and Good Luck."

"I think what we're seeing is just the natural evolution when things get tight," Williams added in an interview Friday.
